Stephen was born in Dublin, Ireland. He gained a BA in music and philosophy and a first-class honours BMus at University College Dublin in 2005 and 2006, respectively. Stephen then moved to London, where he completed an MMus at King's College in 2007. Stephen currently lives in London, where he is nearing the completion of his PhD on underground experimental music at Goldsmiths College, University of London. This research is funded by a scholarship from the National University of Ireland. Stephen is a visiting lecturer at Goldsmith's in 2011-2012, where he is teaching the undergraduate courses 'Music, Identity and Communication', and 'Popular Music: History, Style, and Technique'.
Stephen has been writing for Musical Criticism since February 2008. He held the position of Contemporary Music Editor from September 2008 - July 2009, and Concerts Editor from July 2009 - September 2011. He is now Classical/Contemporary Music Editor at the Journal of Music, and blogs at robotsdancingalone.wordpress.com.
