Opera Holland Park has announced the six operas which will make up its summer 2008 season.
According to the London-based summer opera company's website, Verdi's Il trovatore, Donizetti's La Fille du régiment, Mozart's The Magic Flute, Puccini's Tosca, Ponchielli's La Gioconda and Tchaikovsky's Iolanta will make up the season, which is provisionally set to run from 3 June to 8 August 2008.
Although no casting or production details are given, it had previously been announced that veteran actor and director Simon Callow would be directing the Mozart Singspiel, following on from a previous directorial success with the company.
Furthermore, English baritone Mark Stone's website indicates that he will play Robert in Iolanta, again continuing on from previous appearances with OHP in two of their previous Tchaikovsky operas, Eugene Onegin and The Queen of Spades (particular highlights of recent seasons). Stone put in a thrilling performance last week in Opera Rara's La straniera and will give a recital at Leighton House for OHP with Stephen Barlow on 12 December 2007.
Brad Cohen's website also reveals that he'll once more be getting the OHP season off to a strong start with a mid-period Verdi opera.
For the time being, though, it seems one can only speculate as to other details until they are announced in due course. For my own part, I'd love to see Brad Cooper, who excelled as Almaviva in the 2007 OHP production of Il barbiere di Siviglia, return to take on another huge bel canto role, Tonio in La Fille du régiment - but I guess we'll have to wait and see.
