John Woods was born in the Netherlands and brought up largely in Edinburgh, but has lived in London since 1997. He studied for a degree in music with Italian at King’s College London and graduated in 2000 with first class honours, having specialized in analysis of nineteenth and twentieth century composition.
At the age of five, he was given a tape of Itzhak Perlman playing popular violin repertoire and it was clear to him upon first hearing it that music would be a powerful and important part of his life from then on. He began to take an interest in opera ten years later, and it is vocal music that he has a particular affinity with and love for. John has studied singing himself with professors at the Royal Academy of Music and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. No stranger to the stage, his performance credits include seasons with Opera Holland Park and British Youth Opera.
Currently, John works as finance manager of a luxury brand, but relishes his involvement with music, continuing to take private singing lessons and attend opera, concerts and recitals as much as he can. He would not be without the opportunity his writing gives him to expose himself continuously to new repertoire and develop his relationship with the music he already knows and loves.
